Isla Holbox El tesoro mejor guardado de México. Mexico’s best kept treasure. Isla Holbox es un paradisiaco rincón de México, se localiza en el extremo norte de Quintana Roo y su nombre significa en maya yucateco “Hoyo negro”. Holbox es parte de la reserva de la biosfera y área de protección de flora y fauna Yum Balam, es accesible por vía marítima desde el Puerto de Chiquilá, donde se puede tomar el ferry o lanchas que cruzan la Laguna Yalahau en un trayecto aproximado de 20 minutos. Dentro de la isla, todas las calles son de arena blanca, las coloridas casas con techos de dos aguas, albergan las obras de un sinfín de artistas na- cionales e internacionales, que han plasmando la esencia holboxeña en enormes murales que dan vida a todo el pintoresco pueblo. Entre sus actividades destaca el famoso tour de nado con el tiburón ballena, que de mayo a septiembre visita las cercanías de la isla y ha puesto a Holbox en la mira del via- jero de aventura. También se puede disfrutar de otras actividades como el tour de las tres Islas, ir de pesca, visitar Cabo Catoche, recorrer Holbox en kayaks, nadar en la bioluminis- cencia o simplemente recorrer la isla a pie o bicicleta y dejarte llevar y disfrutar de la naturaleza. Holbox, is located at the northern tip of the Yucatan Peninsula, in Mayan it means “black hole”, and it covers an area of 40 km long and 2 km at its widest point, its northern beach extends for about 34 km. It has several canals that connect the sea with the Conil Lagoon. Holbox Island is part of the nature reserve and protected area of Yum Balam. Holbox Island has recently become a destination for adventure travel; The transportation within the Island is made of golf cart taxis, bicycles and since basically everything is walking distance it’s not unusual to walk everywhere. Several tours can be arranged at Hol- box Island, The mighty Whale shark can be spotted at the island and its surroundings from June to September.
