iHolbox Magazine • 31 I t is known that this is the spot for the first landing of the Spanish Conquista- dors, during the first formal expedition of Francisco Hernandez de Cordoba coming from Cuba in 1517. The goal of the expedition was to discover new territories and bring natives back to the Caribbean islands in order to repopu- late them since the great majority of the natives had already been killed by either gunpowder or the diseases brought by the Europeans. According to the Spanish journals, the Mayas with spears, arrows and shields attacked them at the very moment they touched land, They were forced back to their ships and sailed around the Yucat- an before heading back to Cuba. During the colony a Catholic church was built in the nearby surroundings that is known as Boca Iglesias. There are no roads that can take you to Cabo Catoche by land; you can only get to the ruins of Ekab and Boca Iglesia by sea which is also a great area to spot the Whale Sharks.
