iHolbox Pocket Guide Book Summer 2018

iHolbox Magazine • 35 I f something makes Holbox is its peo- ple, its cuisine, and of course its quiet beaches. It is here, at this location facing the green-turquoise sea, where Raíces was born as a small beach restaurant eight years ago. Right at the best beachfront location and staffed by its owner Evelio Ávila, this place has become one of the best places to enjoy the delights offered by Holbox Island. Raices is very much like wine ... it just keeps getting better as it ages and time goes by. This place has it all for your delightful pleasure: great food with a unique smoky flavor, a beach club, live music, SUP rental, kayaks and the best sunsets in town. For Evelio, the most important thing is to maintain an organic environment - almost artisanal -, where gastronomy mixes the tiny guilty pleasures of life; such as burying your feet in the white soft sand while sipping up a tequila, mezcal or a Pox, which happens to be one of the oldest and most traditional drinks of the Mayan World. Every meal served at Raices, is slowly cooked, in a smoky woodfire the same way it used to be cooked for millennials by the Mayan, a heritage that grants every dish a unique Caribbean flavor. One the highlights of this menu is defi- nitely the seafood platter for 2 that is served with lobster, shrimp, squid, crab, fried fish, and even tikin-xic style fish; a definite must to enjoy this great beach venue. Sunsets at Raices are truly memorable, every day the sound of a triton conch fills the atmosphere to say farewell to the sun. During weekends there is also a fire show after the conch ceremony. Eight years after its founding, the Rasta Palapa of Holbox Island continues to amaze all of its visitors. Abierto / Open 11:00 a.m – 10:00 p.m. Abierto Todos los días / Open Daily +52 1 984 136 0017
