E ntre los meses de mayo a septiem- bre, arriba a las costas de Isla Holbox el tiburón ballena considerado el pez más grande existente en el mundo. El tiburón ballena (Rhincodon typus) también conocido como dominó o pez dama, es una de las tres especies de tiburones que se alimentan mediante un mecanismo de filtración del agua, junto con el tiburón peregrino (Cetorhi- nus maximus) y el tiburón boquiancho (Megachasma pelagios), donde retiene una amplia variedad de plancton y nec- ton, incluyendo pequeños crustáceos como krill, larva de cangrejos, pequeños peces como sardinas y ocasional- mente presas de mayor tamaño como pequeños atunes y calamar. Cada tiburón tiene un patrón único de manchas que permite su identificación individual, puesto que no se modifica con el crecimiento. A este gentil pez le caracterizan sus movimientos son lentos, lo cual permite su avistamiento e incluso nadar con ellos. Los tiburones ballena prefieren el agua superficial cálida, o aquellas áreas donde hay brotes de agua más fría rica en nutrientes, ya que esas condiciones favorecen el crecimiento del plancton del cual se alimenta. Este fenómeno natural sucede muy cerca de Isla Holbox, específicamente al noreste de Cabo Catoche. Esa es una de las razones que hacen de Isla Holbox, el mejor lugar para nadar con el tiburón ballena durante el verano. T he Whale shark is the largest fish in the world which is spotted in Holbox Island between the months of June through September. The whale shark (Rhincodon typus) feeds through a water filtering mechanism, which holds a wide variety of plankton and nekton, including small crustaceans, krill, crab larvae and small fish like sardines, anchovies and sometimes larger prey like tuna and squid. Its slowmotion as it approaches the water surface allows the sighting and swimming with them. The round spots on its back have been the source for several names like: dominoes or checker fish, referring to the checkers board game. Each Whale shark has a unique spots pattern that makes it easier to identify them individually, since it doesn’t really change, as they grow old. Whale sharks prefer warm surface waters, or areas where the water is rich in nutrients, since these conditions favor the growth of the plankton on which they feed. This natural phenomenon occurs very near Holbox Island, specifically at the northeast of Cabo Catoche. Turning Holbox Island into a natural whale shark sanctuary where you can swim in the summer.
